solo trip to Edinburgh: neighborhood guides
Central Edinburgh

Taking a stroll along the Royal Mile is the perfect way to get your bearings on your solo trip to Edinburgh
For the purpose of this guide, central Edinburgh is comprised of the areas around Old Town, Edinburgh University, The Royal Mile, Grassmarket and Prince’s Street. If you want to be within walking distance of all of the big league Edinburgh bucket list tourist destinations like Edinburgh Castle, The Scottish National Museum, Camera Obscura World of Illusions, Greyfriar’s Kirkyard and St. Gile’s Cathedral, central Edinburgh is the place to stay on your solo trip to Edinburgh!
is central Edinburgh safe for solo female travelers?
Generally, yes. Edinburgh has a very low crime rate and central Edinburgh is well-lit and busy into the evening. There are plenty of safe things to do alone at night in Edinburgh.
things to be aware of in central Edinburgh
Central Edinburgh is the main tourist area of Edinburgh so it can often be quite crowded during high tourist months. During the spring and summer, you’ll want to book your accommodation well in advance. For Fringe Fest in August, it is not over-preparing to book your hotel 6 months to a year in advance to ensure you stay in a hotel you’re happy with on your solo trip to Edinburgh.
You should also consider booking any guided tours and must-see attractions in advance as well.
Although Edinburgh is generally a very safe city, annoyances to solo female travelers in central Edinburgh may come in the form of unwanted attention from hordes of drunk guys at stag parties (bachelor parties for any Americans reading!) or teenagers causing havoc on motor scooters in The Meadows park.
Edinburgh is a university town so solo female travellers in their 30s and 40s may wish to steer clear of the scene at popular student watering holes in the Cowgate area at night. Drink spiking (i.e. drugging with roofies) has been a persistent problem at local nightclubs so beware!
day

Colorful Cockburn Street is an ideal place to take a stroll on your solo trip to Edinburgh
1. Edinburgh Castle
Can you really say you visited Edinburgh if you don’t make a stop at Edinburgh Castle? Make sure you book your admission in advance to avoid queuing in long lines!
2. Visit the Cat Cafe
17 West Port, EH1 2JA
Maison de Moggy is Edinburgh’s first cat cafe! About a dozen felines make Maison de Moggy their home, and you are free to admire them as you enjoy a coffee, cake, or other hot drinks. They even serve gluten-free options. Located centrally in Grassmarket, a pop into Maison de Moggy would be a delightful thing to do alone in Edinburgh on a rainy afternoon!
3. Military Tattoo
If you love spectacle, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is about as big as it gets! This extravaganza of military bands and synchronized performances takes place every August on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. Complete with a fireworks display and a light show using the castle as a backdrop, the Military Tattoo is a must-do if you find yourself alone in Edinburgh during the August festival season!

63 Causewayside, Newington, Edinburgh EH9 1QF
Edinburgh is steeped in witchy history. Get to know the city for a bit and chances are you’ll find more than one reference to the hundreds of Scottish women who were falsely trialed, tortured, and murdered for witchcraft during Scotland’s witch hysteria.
These days many folks are getting in touch with their pagan roots and embracing their inner witch. Wheel of Fate is Edinburgh’s newest witchcraft and folkloric shop. In addition to a storefront selling handmade goods, Wheel of Fate also has its very own witchcraft studio, where you can make your own broom, bind a spellbook or create handcrafted fiber art! A studio workshop at Wheel of Fate would be the perfect activity for a solo female traveler looking for offbeat things to do alone in Edinburgh.

Plus, a friendly and knowledgable witchy staff to help you put your loot to good use!
Black Moon Botanica periodically offers tarot reading and hosts workshops on everything from astrology, herbology and moon magic, so check their website to find some fabulously witchy things to do alone in Edinburgh where you could strike up a magical new friendship!

Why not take home a retro souvenir to remember your solo trip to Edinburgh? In my opinion, textiles make the ideal holiday shopping. They’re lightweight, unbreakable, and easy to pack in your luggage.

Part museum, park vintage shop, all retro vibes, Armstrong and Sons is my favorite local chain of vintage shops in Edinburgh. They have shops dotted throughout town, but my favorite location by far is the one in Grassmarket, because of the odd collection of displays they have. Don’t forget to look up!

13. Coffee at TJ Wall’s
Forrest Rd, Edinburgh EH1 2QN
I’m going to let you in on a little secret…TJ Wall’s is my favorite coffee shop in Edinburgh! If the classic academia vibe and the lovely lattes don’t win you over, a huge bonus is that this cafe is the perfect place to catch up on that book you’re reading because they don’t have wifi! Just around the corner from Grassmarket and the National Museum of Scotland, this cafe is the perfect pitstop for solo dining in Edinburgh after your adventures!

15. Project Bliss Dance Experience
Various Locations
“No wrong, no right, just be,” is their motto. Project Bliss is a come-one, come-all dance journey you’ll never forget! You’ll pop on a pair of wireless headphones through which you’ll hear music and be guided through some free-form movement by the workshop’s facilitator. Each session features a theme such as earth, air, fire, or water and involves a warm-up, free movement, and cool down/ closing circle. This is a great thing to do alone in Edinburgh because the dancing itself doesn’t require any chatting with other participants, but afterward, everyone is invited to connect at the cafe in Summerhall. leith

Feeling very nautical at Edinburgh’s Port of Leith
Once known as the rough and ready part of town that inspired Irvine Welsh’s famed Trainspotting novels, Leith has undergone a revitalization in the last decade and is now one of Edinburgh’s most vibrant and exciting neighborhoods. With incredible nightlife, cuisine from across the globe, and an abundance of local color, in my book, Leith is the place to be if you’re looking for offbeat things to do alone on your solo trip to Edinburgh.
Now that Edinburgh’s new tram extension is alive and kicking, Leith is more connected to the rest of Edinburgh than ever before. So what are you waiting for? Hop on the tram from Prince’s Street and head on down to Leith!
Leith is also served by a variety of busses, including the 16, 14, 7, 11 and 22 busses.
is leith safe for solo female travelers?
I lived in Leith as a solo female for three years and to me, the neighborhood is my beloved home away from home. The busy areas along the main drag of Leith Walk from the Omni Centre to Foot of the Walk should be safe for solo female travelers in the daytime and evenings. Leith Walk is busy and bustling well into the evening, providing so many options for things to do alone at night in Edinburgh that you can get to by foot if you’re staying in Leith!
things to be aware of in leith
Although Leith is revitalizing at a rapid speed, there are still some areas of Leith that may be off-putting for solo female travelers. Use caution late at night and in the wee hours of the morning. In spite of this, Leith is still full of fun and interesting things to do alone at night in Edinburgh.
When in doubt, remember that Leith is a tight-knit community, and one of the reasons I loved living there is that if you’ve got a problem, help is never far away. If someone is making you feel uncomfortable in Leith, pop into a nearby shop, pub or restaurant and ask someone for help. You’ll be looked after. Asking for help if you’re uncomfortable is a good general rule in all of Edinburgh. Locals in Scotland are friendly and tend to be willing to help.
If you’re unsure of yourself in Leith, avoid side streets after dark (especially as you get further down Leith Walk below Pilrig Street) and steer clear of the area around the Easter Road stadium on game days.
Using my favorite tips for safe solo female travel should keep you safe in Leith. Please don’t let this area’s checkered past stop you from discovering Leith on your solo trip to Edinburgh!

I (F) lived there for 18 months. Granted this was in 2014, so a few years ago, but I would still say Edinburgh is absolutely safe for female solo travellers. This is low-hanging fruit here, but do the paved walk around Arthur’s Seat, and/or hike to the top of Salisbury Crags, or, even to the very top of Arthur’s Seat – just be warned the trail to the top is steep and can be VERY muddy and slippery if it’s been raining. (Hence why I usually stuck to the paved trail or the crags)
Walk up around the Meadows near the Unversity. Visit Union Canal up toward the Firth. Walk up from the Holyrood Palace, up Cannongate which turns into the Royal Mile, all the way up to Edinburgh Castle. Visit the Castle. Explore Princes Street Gardens below the castle. Visit picturesque Dean Village and walk along the Waters of Leith path. If you’re there on a Sunday then go to the Stockbridge farmer’s market. Visit the botanic gardens. Portobello beach in the summer.
Day trips: shopping in Glasgow, or take a bus tour to the Highlands.
