Getting around the Isle of Skye without a car is doable with a bit of patience and planning ahead. You can get around the Isle of Skye as a solo female traveler using a combination of local busses, hiking, and taxis, which are best booked ahead of time.
Is it worth staying on the Isle of Skye?
Absolutely. The Isle of Skye is stunningly magical. However, its distance from major hubs such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness means that to get the most out of your solo female travel to the Isle of Skye, you should plan to book a hotel or hostel and stay the night.
How much time do you need for the Isle of Skye?
Two to three nights would be an ideal visit length for a solo female traveler without a car to see the top attractions on the Isle of Skye.
IS ISLE OF SKYE SAFE FOR SOLO FEMALE TRAVELLERS?
Generally, yes. Scotland overall has a relatively low crime rate. Locals on the Isle of Skye are usually very friendly and open to tourists. It’s easy to ask for directions or help if you’re lost. Because Skye is such a popular destination for tourists in Scotland, there is the opportunity to meet other travelers on your solo female travel to Skye, thus increasing your safety.
Safety risks for solo female travelers to the Isle of Skye

Rugged Terrain
Skye’s breathtaking scenery can pack some unexpected hazards such as boggy, uneven ground or steep, rocky inclines that can get slippery in wet weather. An added challenge I was warned about on my solo female travel to Skye has to do with the fact that Skye’s enticing mountains are at sea level. Therefore, they look closer and less steep than they are. The owner of the hiking lodge I stayed in cautioned me that many hikers have miscalculated how easy the mountains are to scale and wound up on a longer, tougher hike than they were prepared for.
Exposure to Elements
There’s an old saying in Scotland, if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes. The weather on the Isle of Skye can run the gamut from bright and sunny to dangerously high winds and hail… all within the space of a few hours. Just because it’s a nice day when you leave the lodge doesn’t mean it will stay that way. Even in the summer months, the weather in Skye can get raw and cold. Especially in the evenings.
Cliffs
There are lots of them. They are steep. You’re going to want to get close to the edge. Take care, as slippery terrain or a sudden gust of wind can knock you over the edge. We don’t want to lose any solo female travelers to the Isle of Skye off the edge of a cliff!
Getting Lost
Hiking trails can get confusing, especially when fog and other gnarly weather moves in.
SAFETY TIPS FOR SOLO FEMALE TRAVELLERS TO THE ISLE OF SKYE

Pack Layers of Clothing
A waterproof outer shell and sturdy, waterproof trainers are a must on your solo female travel to the Isle of Skye. I also favor lightweight, wool base layers because they wick sweat away and keep you warm even when you’re wet. You may also wish to pack a fleece or wool sweater (yes, even in summer!) along with a hat, gloves, or rain trousers.
Don’t hike without a map
Don’t just go for a stroll on the moor without a plan. Make sure you have a map that clearly marks all trails, along with how difficult they are and how long they are likely to take. The local tourist board or the front desk at your lodging should be able to advise you when it comes to trails. Some hikers also find it useful to pack a satellite hiking GPS device.
Pack extra water and snacks
That way, you’re prepared if bad weather rolls in and your hiking takes longer than expected.
Tell someone where you’re going and when in doubt, don’t go alone
But you’re a solo female traveler to the Isle of Skye, isn’t buddying up cheating? Ok, so just because you arrived soo doesn’t mean you have to stay solo! Some local lodges are very social, with many visitors planning to go on the same hike. Why not connect with some other travelers around the fire and plan a hike together? At the very least, tell the front desk when you’re leaving and when you plan to go back or leave a note on your bed.

It would be really amazing to be able to move around as we please in a hired car. But I was wondering if there’s any public transport on the isle, do you have any idea? Been planning for Skye since I landed here in Glasgow 5 months ago.
The Offbeat Adventuress
EarthlingThere are definitely public busses on Skye but I don’t know how frequent they are or how comprehensive the service is. There were some remote parts where we didn’t see other motorists on the road… let alone busses! Of course, you can take the steam train to Skye too, which is something I’ve always wanted to do, and there are group bus tours which I considered.
