There’s an option to sit up top in the open-air section (so great for photos!) or indoors on the bottom floor. This is a stellar way to kick off your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary if you’re not feeling full steam ahead!

Camera Obscura World of Illusions
Perched high atop the Royal Mile, Camera Obscura is honestly one of my favorite tourist attractions in Edinburgh. If the three floors of immersive optical illusions aren’t enough for you, climb to the very top of the museum for a 360-degree view of the Edinburgh skyline, viewed through their famous Camera Obscura. This is a wonderful way to get an overview of the city to kick off your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary.

St. Gile’s Cathedral
This stunning gothic cathedral is located on the Royal Mile, just down the road from the Camera Obscura. A working church for roughly 900 years, St. Gile’s Cathedral has been a setting for much of Scotland’s turbulent religious history. One of the coolest things about St. Giles is that it serves as a concert hall for various music performances throughout the year, hosting everything from classical music to reimaginings of contemporary rock and pop music. Be sure to check the St. Gile’s event calendar if you’re a music lover. Seeing a concert at St. Giles would be a wonderful thing to add to your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary for solo female travelers over 30.
Address: High St, Edinburgh EH1 1RE
Writer’s Museum

Did you know that Edinburgh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for literature? Yep, the whole city! There’s no better place to dive into Edinburgh’s rich literary history than the Edinburgh Writer’s Museum. Located in an idyllic cobbled close just off of the Lawnmarket, this beautiful historic building celebrates the lives of three of Edinburgh’s most iconic writers, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Robert Burns.
Top Tip: take a moment to linger in Lady’s Stair Close, one of the most Iconic Closes in Edinburgh. Home to the 400-year-old Lady’s Stair House, this is one of the most sought-after Instagram spots in Edinburgh. Bring your tripod, because this is a lovely place to take a selfie during your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary for solo female travellers.
Address: Lawnmarket, Lady Stair’s Cl, Edinburgh EH1 2PA
Shopping on Victoria Street

Victoria Street is one of the prettiest and most photographed streets in Edinburgh. This colorful cobbled lane is yet another UNESCO gem in Edinburgh. Many people say that Victoria Street may have been the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter, and when you go there it will be easy to see why! Lined with cute boutiques and iconic bookshops, this is a perfect spot to wind down with some window shopping as the first afternoon of your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary draws to a close.

Non-Alcoholic Fun in Edinburgh:

Monkey Barrel Comedy Club

Edinburgh has a great comedy scene, and one of the best places to experience this is at the renowned comedy club, The Monkey Barrel. This intimate underground theater just off the Royal Mile hosts a variety of local and big-name comics all year long. I think visiting a comedy club is a perfect evening activity for a solo female traveler over 30. it’s easy to strike up a conversation with your neighbors at these places, or simply enjoy the laughs on your own.

day2: castles & culture

Hopefully, you didn’t hit the whiskey too hard last night because you’ve got a big day ahead of you. Throw on your best walking shoes and pack a small backpack because day 2 of your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary for solo female travelers over 30 will take you beyond the Royal Mile to some of Edinburgh’s most iconic spots.
morning
No visit to Edinburgh is complete without a trip to the iconic Edinburgh Castle. My advice to any solo female traveler to Edinburgh is to plan to go to Edinburgh Castle in the morning to get ahead of the crowds. The castle complex is massive and you’ll want to leave about two hours to explore it. The castle ramparts offer sweeping views of the city. Yet another perfect spot for a photo-op on your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary.
Don’t forget to look around!: One of my favorite spots at Edinburgh Castle isn’t the crown jewels, it’s a tiny little pet cemetery for dogs of the castle.
Top tip: Tickets to Edinburgh Castle are timed. Buy your ticket online in advance to avoid standing in a long queue.
book your castle tickets in advance:
lunch
Today it’s time for a quintessential British experience, high tea! Don’t worry about not being dressed up. Dining out in Edinburgh can be very casual and it is not required to dress up for high tea…unless you feel like it!
what is high tea?

High tea is typically a midday or afternoon luncheon where you will dine on small sandwiches, scones, clotted creme, and tiny cakes, all while enjoying tea (or sometimes a glass of bubbly if you wish!). You’ll be brought your food in two courses on pretty little tiered trays. A typical high tea is a relaxed affair that can take up to two hours.
The Balmoral Hotel:
The Balmoral’s High Tea is next level. You’ll be whisked into Palm Court, the Balmoral’s glass-domed champagne room. From there you’ll be serenaded with harp music in a sumptuous environment including fresh flower arrangements and luxurious fabrics. Get ready to be spoiled rotten with tea, cakes, and sandwiches for two hours. The fun doesn’t stop there, the Balmoral’s staff will load you up with takeaway boxes including any tea and sandwiches you couldn’t finish, tea samples in a keepsake tin, and a small box of truffles. Simply divine!
Address: 1 Princes St, Edinburgh EH2 2EQ
VEGAN & GLUTEN FREE HIGH TEA

Holy Cow:
If you’re looking for a vegan and gluten-free high tea, you simply must visit my favorite vegan restaurant in Edinburgh. Holy Cow is a cute and cozy little underground cafe right in the heart of Edinburgh. Their menu is 100% vegan and they do a great job of catering to gluten-free diners as well. I am especially fond of their gluten-free cake selection. My favorite is the red velvet!
Address: 34 Elder St, Edinburgh EH1 3DX
Top tip: Holy Cow is just around the corner from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. If you’re at a bit of loose ends, you may wish to stop by and get a look at the museum’s intricately decorated foyer and mezzanine. Entrance to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery is free, so it’s a perfect spot to pop in whether you’ve got a few minutes or a few hours.
Address: 1 Queen St, Edinburgh EH2 1JD

PALACE OF HOLYROOD HOUSE

Ready to feel Royal? You’re about to visit Holyrood House, the spot where Mary Queen of Scotts was imprisoned in her final days. This ornate palace isn’t just steeped in history, it is a working palace to this day. The Royal Family calls the Palace of Holyrood House their home when they are in Scotland.
Top tip: Don’t forget to pay a visit next door to Holyrood Abbey. This ruined 12th-century Abbey casts an eerie shadow and is a wonderful spot to spend a bit of time with your camera on your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary.

sunset on Calton hill
When it comes to sunsets or star gazing, Calton Hill is a favorite of both locals and tourists alike. One climb to the top and you’ll see why, Calton Hill is one of the only places in Edinburgh where you can get a bird’s eye view of the entire city, from Princes Street and Castle Hill to the Palace of Holyrood House, to the rooftops of New Town, down to Edinburgh’s waterfront and harbor.
Top tip: depending on what time of the year you visit Edinburgh, sunset may take place at radically different times. In the winter months of December and January, sunset can take place as early as 3 o’clock in the afternoon. In July and August, the sun doesn’t set until close to midnight. Calton Hill is magical any time of day, but if you’re hell-bent on seeing the sunset in the summer, you may want to go to dinner first. Trust me, you’ll have plenty of time.
Points of Interest on Calton Hill:
National Monument of Scotland: This imposing Roman structure is a memorial to Scottish Soldiers lost in the Napoleonic Wars. It’s also a prime place to sit and watch the sunset.

I have lost count of how many times I’ve been there and each visit still feels like tumbling headfirst into a fairytale.

Go to a Ceilidh

If you’re ready to throw yourself into Scottish culture headfirst (quite literally) go to a Ceilidh. (protip: it’s roughly pronounced kay-lee). This is a traditional Scottish country dance with a live band and a dance caller.
You may recall some of these dances from your middle school square dance because some of American folk dancing is descended from Scottish country dance. If square dances gave you social anxiety as a kid you should still give it a try. This is a fun, raucous environment where it doesn’t matter if you have two left feet! Don’t worry about being alone, a Ceilidh is a great place to make new friends!

Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the city and the countryside beyond Edinburgh stretching off into the distance. What a lovely way to round off your Edinburgh 3-day itinerary!
